Tells the story of two teen girls who discover that they were accidentally switched at birth. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and two brothers, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing as a child due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a poor neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.

Travis and Bay have dinner with his birth mom, but the reunion dredges up painful memories of his childhood assault. Elsewhere, Daphne contemplates helping Chris cheat on a test; and Regina gets paid an unexpected visit.
In desperate need for money, Bay and Daphne host a party with disastrous results. Reappearance of old faces bring up old tensions. Regina and Kathryn become suspicious of Luca.
Bay and Daphne are flooded with memories of their late father after meeting a mysterious woman. Meanwhile, Toby is caught between his mother's wishes to baptize his son and his wife's feelings about faith; and Melody asks her sons to make amends so the family can be together for her birthday.
Daphne volunteers at a clinic and grows concerned when her medical mentor makes multiple mistakes with his patients; Mingo leads the annual Kangaroo Krawl; Bay finds Noelle is plagiarizing her work; John and Kathryn try to rekindle their romance; and Regina is put in a precarious situation when she decides to expand her business.
The Black Student Union take a stand against the university administration until their demands are heard. Iris continues her hunger strike until the students responsible for a racist display are expelled; Sharee gathers signatures and rallies students; and Chris is torn between playing in a game with baseball scouts and standing with his fellow students to show solidarity.
Iris starts a protest demanding a fight against racism, but it could cause her trouble. Bay gets caught in a love triangle between Travis and Emmet.
Toby and Lily return from London with immediate plans to get married in the Kennish's backyard, but a fight before the ceremony threatens their impending union. Meanwhile, Regina debates whether to reveal her relationship with Luca to her family; and Bay runs into Tank.
Daphne and Mingo are accused of racism at College. Bay struggles with her feelings for Emmet and Travis.
Daphne and Bay receive an emergency phone call while in China and return home, where Daphne readjusts to campus life and Bay feels conflicted about her feelings for Emmett. Meanwhile, Kathryn and John argue about her job; and Regina feels guilty about a secret romance.
