Fast-talking New Yorker and brand new doctor Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) has it all figured out - after graduating top of her class from medical school, she'll follow in her father's footsteps and become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. But when her dreams fall apart, Zoe decides to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama.

Zoe (Rachel Bilson) gets sad when she realizes she doesn’t have an heirloom to pass down to their child, so Wade (Wilson Bethel) makes it his mission to find something from one of their pasts. Brick (Tim Matheson) is disappointed when everyone forgets his birthday, so when Lavon (Cress Williams) and Wade invite Brick on a fishing excursion, he thinks he is being led to a surprise party. Lemon (Jaime King) and Zoe try make plans to have a girls’ day, but things do not go as planned. Meanwhile, George’s (Scott Porter) parents come to town and they are shocked by who he is dating and his new job. Kaitlyn Black also stars.
Zoe (Rachel Bilson) gets upset when she sees Wade (Wilson Bethel) flirt with a few ladies, so she forces him to change his ways. Needing some guidance, Wade turns to Lavon (Cress Williams) for help, but soon finds himself in even worse trouble. Lemon (Jaime King) is blindsided by someone from her past and must make a tough decision on how to handle the situation. Meanwhile, George (Scott Porter) and AnnaBeth (Kaitlyn Black) try to make their own new adventures together, but are finding it harder than they thought. Tim Matheson also stars.
After Zoe and Wade learn the gender of their baby, they are struck with the realization that neither one of them is ready for parenthood. BlueBell is in contention for hosting the state football championship, but only if they partner with the rival town of Fillmore. Begrudgingly, Lemon helps convince Lavon to talk to his nemesis, but he needs AnnaBeth's help to get him close to the Mayor. Meanwhile, Brick gets a surprise from his past that shakes him to his core.
Wade tries to bring customers back to the Rammer Jammer by securing a surprise musical performance; Lemon and Lavon try to move on, but run into each other at a singles event.
When Lavon (Cress Williams) hears of Lemon’s (Jaime King) financial woes, he organizes a BlueBell talent show, giving the townspeople, including Lemon, a chance to win some extra money. However, with the contestants feeling intimidated by Shelby’s (guest star Laura Bell Bundy) participation, her sudden illness before her performance becomes a mystery the entire town tries to solve. Meanwhile, Zoe (Rachel Bilson) and Wade (Wilson Bethel) find themselves in a compromising situation that would require them to reveal their current relationship status.
Zoe goes to New York and Wade follows. After so many ups and downs, they are finally making progress in their relationship. Meanwhile, Lemon, Annabeth, George and Lavon remember their high school days and make decisions about their love lives too.
Zoe buries herself in work and, confused by Zoe's behavior, Wade seeks love advice from Lemon. Lemon and Brick are trying to keep the truth about their love lives from Grandma Bettie.
